3 Tips For Putting Your Car Into Storage

Blog

Do you own an exotic car like a convertible that might not do well during winter weather? If so, it might be a good idea to put your vehicle into long-term storage. That said, you have some work to do before you hand your car off to the storage facility if you want it to remain in great shape all winter long. Here are three tips to keep in mind when putting your vehicle into car storage.

Wash and Cover

Even if your car is relatively clean, you should still give it a complete washing before you place it into long-term storage. That is because even one speck of dirt could cause damage to your vehicle's paint job if it is allowed to sit there for months at a time. Give your car a fresh coat of wax while you're at it for extra protection. Then, it's time to cover your car with a full body cover. A cover like this can help keep dirt or dust from accumulating and will also protect your vehicle from any critters who might try to get in.

Interior and Under the Hood

Make sure you clean out the interior of your car as well. You don't want to leave anything perishable inside the vehicle because it will obviously rot and create quite a stench, which could be hard to get rid of next spring. Double check the trunk and the glove box as well. Under the hood, you will want to disconnect your battery to avoid unnecessary drain. You may also want to change the engine oil if is about due for one or if you notice it's dirty. Fill up your gas tank and add a fuel stabilizer so it can make it through the long months ahead.

Find the Right Storage Facility

Finally, it's time to figure out where you are going to store your vehicle. You ideally will want to find a storage place that can offer temperature control, and of course, 24/7 security is also key. Some self-storage facilities can offer storage spaces large enough to hold a car, but you might also want to look for specialty facilities specifically designed for car storage in your area.

Make sure your vehicle is spotless both inside and out before you put it into long-term storage. Invest in a car cover and find a reputable storage facility to give you peace of mind that your vehicle will be in great condition come next spring.
